Stop Shocking our Mothers and Grandmothers! 2010

Stop public funding of electroshock “therapy!” Psychiatric survivors, mad people, activists, scholars, students, radical professionals, and artists came together in protest of the province’s continuing sponsorship of electroconvulsive therapy, a controversial and often involuntary procedure that is most commonly inflicted upon women and the elderly. This event was a finale to and came on the heels of the PsychOut conference: A conference for organizing resistance against psychiatry. The event was followed by a private member’s bill to discontinue public funding for electroshock, introduced into the legislature by NDP Parkdale-High Park MPP Cheri DiNovo.
